Sorry to disappoint anyone who was hoping for something more in line with “Fifty Shades of Grey” but it seemed time for another American cocktail blog. Also, the cold front seems to have left Austin and hence jumpers (sweaters) are off–that deserves a toast, surely.
Based on a Sidecar, which was created shortly after the First World War at Harry’s Bar in Paris where an army captain was in the habit of arriving in a chauffeur-ridden motorcycle sidecar and for whom Harry made the eponymous cocktail, a Between the Sheets goes a little further to produce a sharp flavor in the following manner:
- 1 1/4 measure brandy or cognac
- 1 measure white rum
- 1/2 measure Cointreau
- 3/4 measure lemon juice
- 1/2 measure sugar syrup
- Shake and strain.
- Garnish: slice of lemon, couple of ice cubes if you wish. Enjoy.
Taking a contemplative swig from my Between the Sheets, I hear a blast of a locomotive’s horn bellowing in the night from the train tracks cutting through the city. Ever a plaintive evocation of Americana. Cheers ears.
